Tourists fond of nature, photography or history, loves to visit Ranthambore 100 kms from Ajmer in Rajasthan. The Ranthambore National Park, is famous for its tigers. The 400 sq km Ranthambore National Park, acclaimed as one of India's finest wildlife locations. This park was established as a sanctuary in 1959 and included in the very first phase of Project Tiger in 1972. In 1981 Ranthambore was awarded National Park status. The park derives its name from the Fort of Ranthambhore which sits on a rocky hilltop in the forest. The fort dates back to the 11th century, the kremlin to control the then central India.

The tiger reigns supreme in Ranthambore which is among the few places in the world where the tigers can be observed at close quarters. There are about 25 tigers and 40 leopards in the reserve. One can spot them at short interval in their natural habitat at the edges of three lakes — Padam Talab, Raj Bagh Talab and Milak Talab.

When to Travel
September to March is the best time to travel Ranthambore. April and May are hot, but ideal for animal sighting as the trees are barren and few water holes have much water at this time of the year.

How to Reach There
The nearest airports are Jaipur and Kota. Ranthambore is situated on the Delhi-Bombay railway-line and also linked with Jaipur and Agra by rails. It is almost 480 km from Delhi (via Duasa) and 180 km from Jaipur (via Tonk).

One can find stork, Peafowl, Bonelli's eagle, crested serpent eagle, the great Indian horned owl, quail, partridge, spur fowl and the paradise flycatcher. Ranthambore has large numbers of sambar, chital and nilgai. Among the other local fauna are the leopard, hyena. jackal, jungle cats, slothe bear and marsh crocodile.

Ranthambore Fort : This ancient fort stands majestically on the top a hill overlooking the entire park. The fort offers many interesting architectural and historical sights worth viewing. One can take a clear view (with the help of a binocular) of the surrounding from this fort. The fort is the perfect place to see the soaring serpent, eagles, vultures and other birds & animals at eye level.

Kachida Valley : This valley is located close to the outskirts of the park. The valley consists of many rocky apperance and low hills. Kachida valley contains majority of the Panther population of the park. This area also has a good population of beers.

Raj Bagh Ruins : These ruins are located between the Padam Talao and the Raj Bagh Talao. The ancient stone structures like palace outhouses, domes, arches and steps give this place an outstanding look. The ruins, the jungle surroundings and the strolling resident tigers give the Ranthambore National Park a unique blend of a wildlife reserve and a reminder of the past.
